Black Employment and Unemployment in January 2013
The unemployment rate for Blacks was 13.8 percent last month. This is according to the latest report on the nations employment situation released Friday morning by the Bureau of Labor Statistics in its monthly Employment Situation report. This rate was a decrease from December, when unemployment in the Black community was 14.0 percent. For the nation as a whole, unemployment was 7.9 percent in the month of January; this was virtually unchanged from December when the national unemployment rate also stood at 7.8 percent. Among whites, unemployment was 7.0 percent; among Latinos, unemployment was 9.7 percent. Comparable December 2012 figures were 6.9 percent and 9.6 percent respectively. Overall, total non-farm payroll employment increased by 157,000 jobs from last month.
