Celebrating a New Focus on Food Workers!
Food Labor Research Center Reception
December 13, 2012
Close to 100 people joined us to celebrate the launch of the new Food Labor Research Center (FLRC) at the University of California, Berkeley.
The FLRC is the first research center in the country to focus on the intersection of food justice and worker justice, and to raise awareness about the wages and working conditions of the 20 million workers in the U.S. food system. Founded this fall as a project of the UC Berkeley Labor Center, the FLRC has already collaborated with the Food Chain Workers Alliance to produce two reports, The Hands That Feed UsJoining FLRC Director Saru Jayaraman for food, wine, and 'food for thought' were these other leading food and labor thinkers:
Joann Lo, Executive Director, Food Chain Workers Alliance
Eric Holt-Giménez, Executive Director, Food First, and author, Food Movements Unite! Strategies to Transform Our Food Systems
Raj Patel, best-selling author of The Value of Nothing and Stuffed and Starved: The Hidden Battle for the World Food System
Anna Lappé, founding principal of the Small Planet Institute and Small Planet Fund, and author of Diet for a Hot Planet: The Climate Crisis at the End of Your Fork and What You Can Do About It.
