The goal of the C. L. Dellums African American Union Leadership School is to train unionists active in the Black community so they are able to assume leadership and staff positions in unions. One central need of unions in the U.S. is additional union leaders who are active in the Black community. Historically, the synergy between the labor movement and the civil rights movement has yielded some of the greatest strides toward justice in this country.
Over the course of eight sessions, participants will develop skills in a variety of areas including campaign planning, member mobilization, and building strategic partnerships. Since the school’s inception, over 90 unionists have come through the program; graduates have increased their level of activism within the labor movement as they work with their union and their central labor council.
This year, the Dellums School is co-sponsored by the Alameda Labor Council (ALC). The ALC serves as an umbrella organization coordinating political, community, and educational programs for more than 120 unions. It represents 100,000 workers in healthcare, transportation, education, construction, manufacturing and service. The mission of the Alameda Labor Council is committed to improving the lives of working families by bringing economic justice to our workplaces and social justice to our communities.
Dates: Sessions are every two weeks on Saturdays beginning May 19 through August 18, 2012
