The UC Berkeley Labor Center is proud to announce the Latino Leadership School, a workshop for Spanish-speaking emerging leaders from unions and community-based organizations. The program will include leadership development, campaign planning, building labor and community alliances, and policy discussions. It will be taught in Spanish, and will provide a unique opportunity for participants to learn organizing skills that can later be shared with peers in their organizations. The goal of the C. L. Dellums African American Union Leadership School is to train unionists active in the Black community so they are able to assume leadership and staff positions in unions. One central need of unions in the U.S. is additional union leaders who are active in the Black community. Historically, the synergy between the labor movement and the civil rights movement has yielded some of the greatest strides toward justice in this country.
Over the course of eight sessions, participants will develop skills in a variety of areas including campaign planning, member mobilization, and building strategic partnerships. Since the school’s inception, over 90 unionists have come through the program; graduates have increased their level of activism within the labor movement as they work with their union and their central labor council.
The 2012 Dellums School was co-sponsored by the Alameda Labor Council (ALC). The ALC serves as an umbrella organization coordinating political, community, and educational programs for more than 120 unions. It represents 100,000 workers in healthcare, transportation, education, construction, manufacturing and service. The mission of the Alameda Labor Council is committed to improving the lives of working families by bringing economic justice to our workplaces and social justice to our communities.
Dates: Eight sessions are every two weeks on Saturdays; 2013 dates TBA.

Participants will be guided through a series of steps to create a comprehensive campaign plan. The workshop will build participants' ability to:
- move a campaign forward and build the organization;
- improve member participation;
- analyze power dynamics;
- utilize strategies that build on the strengths of the organization and consider the weaknesses of key players;
- develop a unifying theme that the public can support;

- practice how to revise the campaign plan as events unfold.
The roles of research, external communications, political action, strategic partnerships and membership development will be examined.
