Report: Wages Not Keeping Up With Inflation

ABC7 news, September 4, 2006

Sept. 4 - KGO - Productivity is up and so are corporate profits, but workers in California and throughout the nation are not earning bigger paychecks.

That's according to a new report by U.C. Berkeley's Center For Labor Research and Education.

It found wages for California workers remained stagnant for the past year, while pay throughout the U.S. is failing to keep up with inflation.

The former director of California's labor department says the workplace is changing and people are no longer staying with one job for their entire career.

Michael Bernick, Fmr. Director, California Labor Dept.: "All of us are going to be changing jobs, all of us are going to be changing professions, the key in the future labor market will be how you adapt, being able to adapt, being able to learn new skills, not getting down on yourself, being able to move around to new jobs."

The report says corporate profits increased by 12.5 percent between 2004 and 2005. Wages in California increased four-tenths of a percent last year and wages declined nearly one percent across the U.S.
