NUMBER OF INSURED DECLINING

Detroit Free Press, June 3, 2005

 By Bloomberg News

About 1.3 million adults in the United States lose their employer-sponsored health insurance with each 10% average rise in premiums, according to a study released Thursday by the Center for Labor Research and Education at the University of California, Berkeley.

The average employee contribution for family insurance last year rose to $3,156, or 32% of the total cost, from $1,670, or 25%, in 2000.

About 45 million Americans don't have medical insurance, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, and increases in premiums will cause 6.2 million more to lose health coverage by 2010, the report's authors said. At the same time, states such as Tennessee are trying to shrink the number who qualify for Medicaid, one of the authors said.

The California Endowment and the Blue Shield Foundation of California funded the research, which was done with Working Partnerships USA, a nonprofit group.
