IRLE is an “Organized Research Unit” of the University of California at Berkeley. IRLE brings together faculty from several academic departments and supports multidisciplinary research about labor and employment relations. IRLE sponsors many faculty-run research centers. IRLE sponsors numerous community service programs, including the California Public Employee Relations, Center for Labor Research and Education, the Center on Wage and Employment Dynamics, Center for the Study of Child Care Employment (CSCCE). It publishes the widely respected academic journal, Industrial Relations: A Journal of Economy and Society, and houses an important research library that collects and preserves a wide array of information about work, organizations and labor issues.
The Center for Labor Research and Education (Labor Center) provides public service and outreach program providing research and information on unions and the changing workforce for students, scholars, policymakers and the public. Labor Center workshops and leadership development schools build the capacity of unions and community organizations to address a rapidly changing and challenging political and economic environment.
The Program Assistant performs a variety of moderately complex to difficult tasks across a variety of administrative functions in support of varied programs offered by the Center for Labor Research and Education (CLRE). Tasks include developing materials and database for program outreach; ensuring each program has the appropriate logistical support; preparing materials for delivery to program participants; assisting program leads with evaluation of the program after completion. Attend, prepare agendas, and take notes from regular program team meetings where appropriate.
- Supports the labor specialist overseeing the program at the beginning of the program to ensure the 2/3 proper timelines and budgets are adhered to per the project plan
- Under general supervision, (and in conjunction with CRLE’s Communications Coordinator and others) develops database to be used in program outreach; outreach materials; and upload material online
- Works with other program assistants to provide administrative support to the Labor Center programs
- Works with program lead on curricula editing and development
- Ensures basic program logistics (e.g. site management; food; materials) are taken care of
- Works with program presenters to ensure their materials are reproduced for participants and the presents equipment needs are satisfied
- Ensures the program is fully supported of the day of the program
- Works with labor specialists overseeing the program to evaluate the program at its conclusion and other miscellaneous tasks to wrap up the program
- Recruits, trains, and supervises work-study students to complete some of the above tasks
- Provides logistical support to external presenters, facilitators, and stakeholders
- Knowledge in preparation and production of mass mailings for events
- Demonstrated experience in event planning and coordination
- Ability to establish relationships with campus staff and external organizations and individuals necessary for the successful planning of events
- Strong organizational and time management skills
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
- Proficient computer skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, WordPress, and Google Docs/Shared docs
- Ability to provide audio visual support and troubleshoot moderate technical issues related to event production, staging, etc.
- Ability to communicate clearly both verbally and in writing
- Ability to manage competing deadlines and attention to high levels of detail and accuracy
- Ability to follow directions and work with little supervision in a fast paced environment with shifting priorities
- Excellent customer service orientation, initiative, and follow-up
- Ability to interact with a diverse population in a dynamic work environment
- Previous office experience and event coordination required
- Interest in labor issues and workforce development program development, and social and economic justice.
- Fluent in Spanish
