Strategic Research Training

This two-day introductory workshop is intended for beginning union researchers and Labor Summer graduate student researchers interested in working in labor. The training provides participants with an introduction to the concepts and methodologies of union campaign research. Participants will become familiar with library and field research tools that are used in organizing and collective bargaining campaigns. They will see how research can support organizing campaigns, and they will used public records to research actual employers in the context of a strategic campaign.

Personnel Communication Skills for Union Leaders

Helps union leaders and supervisors develop effective communication skills with members of their teams. Topics covered will include:

  • how to motivate staff and give effective feedback
  • how to delegate responsibilities and achieve accountability
  • how to resolve conflict among team members

The workshop will be taught by Eddie Raymond, Vice-president of IATSE Local 16, who serves as training director for stage and theatrical employees, and is a credentialed teacher.

Strategic Campaigns Workshop
Strategic Campaigns

This five-day workshop is for organizers and negotiators, who will enter the workshop with a problem and emerge with a workable plan for launching a campaign to win victories for members and the union.

Online Media Training
Online Media

Learn how to use online tools to organize workers and community members, and garner media attention. This two-day workshop will cover best practices for traditional online tools such as email alerts, websites and online newsletters, and will also introduce emerging online tools and tactics such as blogging, podcasting and social networking, among others.

Financial Skills Workshop

Strategic Budgeting in Hard Economic Times

Two-day workshop for union leaders with responsibility for managing union funds. It is also suitable for department directors who have responsibility for large budgets. We encourage decision-makers to attend with staff who are responsible for financial duties.

Media Skills Workshop

A two-day workshop for union communications directors, leaders, and organizers who carry out media work. Features lessons in creating a communications strategy, developing and practicing effective media messages and learning the nuts and bolts of public relations.
