Job Opening: Fall 2023 GSR, Communications Team

Supervisor: Julie Light, Labor Center Communications Director

The UC Berkeley Labor Center is searching for a second-year journalism graduate student to fill a graduate student researcher position. The GSR will be an adept storyteller documenting the work of the center and the California labor movement. Under the direction of the Labor Center’s communications director, the GSR will produce written and digital materials — including web features, short articles, short videos, and profiles. The communications director will make assignments with input and story ideas from the GSR. The GSR may, on occasion, assist with pitching news stories to reporters on behalf of the Labor Center.

Requirements:

  • Experience writing clear, lively copy appropriate for a range of audiences, including trade unionists, academics, students, and the broader public
  • Able to write quickly and concisely, and meet deadlines while juggling academic work
  • Interest in the California labor movement and labor studies
  • Interview skills, as well as the ability to arrange interviews with students, staff, and members of partner organizations (including frontline workers)
  • Strong grammar, syntax, style, and punctuation skills
  • Attention to detail and fact-checking
  • Able to attend weekly editorial meetings during work hours and occasional evening/weekend events
  • Video editing (Premiere Pro or equivalent)
  • Must complete all required UC online training courses (sexual harassment, workplace safety, etc.)
  • Able to work independently, mostly remotely

Preferred skills (not required):

  • Able to shoot video and still photos
  • Fluency in a second language such as Spanish, Tagalog, or Cantonese
  • Basic ability in design software such as Illustrator, Canva, etc.
  • Experience with labor or other social movements
