About Philip

Philip Allen is the Organizational Development Facilitator with the Coalition of Black Trade Unionists, where he works to strengthen CBTU chapters and leaders, focusing on developing the next generation of union leaders. Prior to CBTU, Philip was the Director of Organizing and Development Initiatives with the Center for Popular Democracy, building sustainable community organizations as well as recruiting staff for partner organizations. Philip has over a decade of experience in the labor movement, including as an organizer at AFSCME. There he was also an Education Coordinator and coordinated the Union Scholars Program, a program co-sponsored by the United Negro College Fund and the Harvard University Worklife Program that mentors and encourages students of color to enter the labor movement with AFSCME.

Philip participated in strategic planning with AFSCME affiliates and was the point person for the Next Wave Program, a program designed to engage younger union members through leadership development and mentoring. Through his various positions he has recruited and trained numerous people within labor and other social justice related fields. Philip is a graduate of Xavier University of Louisiana and the Harvard Trade Union Program. He also completed an Organizational Development and Knowledge Management master’s program at George Mason University.
