About Sierra
Sierra Barton-Peterson (they/them) brings seven years of experience educating in and collaborating with a diverse array of Bay Area communities. As a classroom educator, Sierra centered student experiences as well as racial and social justice in their classroom, including through leading the student research and advocacy project behind their school’s renaming. Most recently, Sierra oversaw the field trips program at Peralta Hacienda Historical Park. While at Peralta, they developed and worked alongside wide-ranging community partnerships to rewrite the existing field trip programming. The revised program focuses on decolonial education, ability-inclusive learning, and student voices – as well as increased access for schools receiving Title 1 funding. Their work with this project was honored with the 2023 California Association of Museum’s Superintendent’s Award for Excellence in Museum Education. Sierra is a UC Berkeley alumni and holds a master’s degree in education from Loyola Marymount University, with a focus on literacy in urban education systems.
