By aligning their contracts, the unions are raising awareness in major metro areas of the need to invest in schools, Ken Jacobs, senior policy adviser at the UC Berkeley Labor Center, said in an interview with EdSource last year.
“CTA is correct to say this is unprecedented for teachers’ unions,” Jacobs told EdSource. “We have seen success in private sector unions aligning contracts across regions.”
“It creates serious insecurity and stress for teachers, including those who are ultimately asked to stay,” said Ken Jacobs. “This will make it harder for districts to hire teachers and leads teachers to leave the profession.”
“They are seeing the bargaining table as more than just about pay and benefits, but what is needed to make education work for students and meet the broader needs of parents and the community,” said Ken Jacobs, chair of the UC Berkeley Center for Labor Research and Education.
“We know they’ve been affected by the crisis more than any other group,” Lozano said. Latinos hold over half of front-line worker jobs in California, according to a 2018 report from UC Berkeley Labor Center.
